2024 Wrap

As 2024 wraps up, it’s time (again) to look back on the year and appreciate the things that deserve acknowledgment… things have shifted, some gradually, and some more over multiple hurdles.

Permanent Residency

After 18 months since the lodgement of the expression of interest, the invitation to apply for 189 Skilled Independent Visa finally came through in June. The process of acquiring police checks from both Australia and Japan, along with medical exams, was a straightforward yet prolonged procedure, but putting an end to the seemingly never-ending waiting game was such a relief (my graduate visa was set to expire mid-December this year, so I was nervous about what might happen if I had to leave Australia). Getting a blue and then green Medicare card felt surreal; after living in Australia for 13 years, I finally have a secure foundation for my career and life in Australia.

More role models in my life & career

It was yet another dreamlike year of meeting and further getting to know people I always admired from a distance. What a privilege to speak the same language (literally and philosophically) and enjoy conversations that mean a lot to human souls. I hope relationships of mutual respect and curiosity can continue into the coming years.

With a stellar boss and a stellar team

On the morning of the final work day (aka office EOY party), I chatted with one of my colleagues, with whom I have worked closely for the last few months. It was a lovely opportunity to unpack my observations of the team and the boss:

  • Amazing leaders know each team member’s strengths and provide opportunities to try, learn and grow. Whether through a project or a conference, I’ve received numerous chances to push the boundaries of my experience and become a knowledge sharer. I’ve been fortunate to have such leaders at work who empower younger crews like me, and my aim for next year is to explore ways to share different ideas I learnt among broader project teams for practical benefits.
  • The more I have worked with my colleagues, the more evident their efforts to unite the team have become. Many via Monday catchups, birthday celebrations, sharing foods and drinks, and daily conversations, but most importantly, it’s the opportunity to learn about each other. In the past year particularly, I’ve started to feel the team more and more like a big family, which is precious in a giant firm of 700+ people.

Backpacking trip to Finland & Denmark

Earlier in the year, I had imagined any international travel as ‘next year’s wish’. However, the alignment of project programmes (tender submission date) and a cheap flight ticket offer convinced me to take time off and explore Finland and Denmark, two countries I always wanted to visit. The experience of walking, observing and drawing was unforgettable.

What 2025 might hold…

The main goal of 2025 will be to get registered as an architect in the second half of the year – it would be an incredible milestone for my architectural education. I’m also crossing my fingers for opportunities to get back into teaching in any shape or form; it’s like a muscle that must be exercised regularly to maintain strength. I’m also excited to be able to continue my involvement in the research project that coincides with the 80th anniversary of the end of WW2. There are many fantastic chances, and I’m fortunate to have been able to seize them.
